Sleep rituals

Not a blog. Three short rituals, written plainly, that you can start tonight with whatever you already own. The pieces underneath each one are the versions we make, and the ritual works without them.

No. 01 / For the night your head will not put the day down

The 15-minute night reset

Fifteen minutes, counted backwards from when you want the light off. No app, no timer, nothing to get right. The order is the whole trick: each step makes the next one easier to start.

  1. Phone down, somewhere else Not face down on the bedside table. Another room, or a drawer. The distance is the point, because the distance is what you will not bother crossing.
  2. Lights low One lamp, not the ceiling. The room getting darker is the day getting smaller.
  3. Write down what is still in your head The PM page. Lists, fragments, one sentence about the thing you are dreading. It does not have to read well, it has to be out of your head and on the page.
  4. Put your mask on Silk against your eyelids and the last of the lamp light gone. This is the step that tells your body the day is finished being negotiated.
  5. Goodnight That is the whole ritual. If you are still awake in half an hour, that is fine. You did the part that was yours to do.

No. 02 / For the end of the weekend

The Sunday night reset

Sunday night has a reputation it mostly deserves. This one takes half an hour, and most of it is just making the bed somewhere you want to be.

  1. Fresh pillowcase Whatever you do to the rest of the bed, change the pillowcase. It is the part your face knows about.
  2. Warm the wrap A minute, no more, and take it to wherever you sit last. The weight across your shoulders is the signal that the weekend is allowed to end.
  3. Ten minutes on the week, on paper Not planning. Just the three things that actually matter by Friday, written down so they stop circling.
  4. Set out the morning The cup, the keys, the clothes. Tomorrow's first five minutes, decided tonight by someone calmer than tomorrow's you.

No. 03 / For the scroll you did not mean to have

The screen-free wind-down

The last hour of the day, with nothing that glows in it. Harder than it sounds for about three nights, and then it is just what the evening is.

  1. Pick the hour, not the intention "Less phone at night" fails by Thursday. "Nothing after ten" is checkable, and you will know when you have done it.
  2. Give your hands something The kettle, the dishes, the dog, the journal. The scroll mostly fills hands, not time, so fill the hands first.
  3. The wrap, warmed, wherever you land Weight is very good company at the end of a day. Shoulders while you read, or over the eyes once you are horizontal.
  4. Charge the phone at the door It ends the argument before it starts, and it makes the morning's first act walking, not scrolling.
