One box, made properly
Sleep Shop is a small studio in Fitzroy. We make beautiful rituals around going to bed, starting with one gift box and the four pieces in it.
Why only one box
Gift shops solve the wrong problem. They give you forty things and leave you to assemble a gift out of them, which is the part that actually takes the effort — working out whether the candle goes with the tea, whether it looks mean with only three items in it, whether the whole thing reads as considered or as panic-bought at 6pm.
So we did that part. One box, four pieces, tested against each other rather than chosen from a catalogue. The mask and the pillowcase are cut from the same silk run so they match exactly. The journal has a page for either end of the day because the evening page is only half the job. Those decisions are the product.
It also means we can be particular about supply. Four things is a small enough list to know where every one of them comes from, and to notice immediately when something changes.
Materials
What things are made of
We publish the fibre, the weight and the maker for everything in the box. If a supplier will not tell us, we do not use them.
Silk
Grade 6A mulberry silk at 22 momme for the sleep mask and pillowcase, cut from the same run. Heavy enough to drape and to survive being washed properly, rather than the 16-momme silk most gift sets use.
Linen and lavender
The wrap is washed linen outside and Australian lavender and wheat inside, grown and filled here rather than imported as a finished unit. The cover unbuttons and washes.
The box and the card
Rigid board wrapped in uncoated paper, made in Victoria, sturdy enough to be reused for something else. The card is letterpress on cotton stock, printed two suburbs away.
The bench
How a box gets packed
Everything is packed on one bench, in the same order every time: tissue, pillowcase, wrap, journal, mask, then the ritual card on top so it is the first thing under the lid. Your card is written last, once, in pen — there is no draft copy.
Two of us pack, and on a normal weekday we get through about forty boxes. Once the first boxes go out on 1 December, an order placed before 2pm is very likely one of that day's forty.
We do not have a shopfront. There is a studio address in Fitzroy and you are welcome to collect from it by appointment, which saves you the delivery wait if you are local and have left it late.
Straight answer
We sell a gift, not an outcome
We are careful about what we claim. This is a box of well-made things for the end of a day — silk, linen, lavender, a journal. We do not make claims about what it will do for anyone, because that is not something a box can promise and we would rather not pretend otherwise.
